Tan
Dun was born in China, but has lived and worked in the USA since 1987.
He numbers among the most successful and sought-after composers of
the younger generation. At the latest, it was his opera, Marco
Polo, and his Symphony 1997, written to commemorate the
return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China, that brought
his music to the attention of a global public. Tan Dun's compositions
repeatedly bring up questions about the past, present and future.
They reflect the ties between the great cultures, and between the
shaman cult of the Far East and Western orchestral traditions. Or,
as John Cage remarked, his music takes us closer to the blending of
East and West. Ritual and ceremony also play a much more important
role in his music than they do in Western compositions. These influences
of Eastern and Western cultures have culminated in a highly personal,
authentic musical language with which we all feel a bond.
